# Can I request a Portuguese birth certificate that was issued over 100 years ago?

It is possible, but this is not a guaranteed process (e.g., you'll get the certificate or the certificate you're looking for). Birth certificates prior to 1912, are NOT available online and/or in the National Register Institute.

This process requires a thorough and rigorous process, where dates and locations have to be precise, as these documents will only be available in parishes or baptism registration within local churches.

**For documents prior to 1912, the service is available only upon request.**
